The original 930 acres of camp was purchased from the estate of George C. Crosby in 1966; originally being named Camp Heritage, and officially opened in 1968. Crosby Lodge, now the Campmaster building was donated to camp by the Crosby family. Camp has since grown to 1,200 acres and in 1985 Viking Council changed the name to Camp Stearns. ► See more Camp History

In 1975 Viking Council created Stearns Webelos Resident Camp, the first ever Cub Scout Resident camping program, & from its success Cub Resident camping has grown nationwide.

Stearns has six sub camps: Family Camp, Camp Gilwell, Camp Heritage, Camp Vikingland, Camp Whitewater, & Camp Woodland.

Camp has shoreline on six lakes: Lake Augusta, Lake Caroline, Cub Lake, Little Otter Lake, Otter Lake, Scout Lake, & two more unnamed ponds.  The Clearwater River also flows through camp boundaries.

Camp Stearns is used year- round by the Northern Star Council BSA.  Uses include: Stearns Cub & Webelos Camp; North Wind; Polar Cubs; Webelos Experience; District Camporees; OA Conclaves; Training camps; Troop & Pack campouts; StarCamp (Council Camporall); LDS Encampment; church, school, & business groups; & family camping.
